I started cleaning up my diet about 6 years ago and it's still an evolving thing for me. I'm still experimenting all the time with what foods work best for me and which ones don't. All in all though, I have my diet mostly figured out and I feel amazing when I'm eating my best. However, it took until just last year to start cleaning up my beauty routine.
Cleaning up my shampoo, conditioner, face wash, makeups, etc. always seemed SO daunting to me.... I had no idea where to start and wasn't convinced it could help me as much as cleaning up my diet did. This is unfortunately a trap many people fall into. It's much easier to focus on what goes inside our body (food & drink) and not put as much attention into what goes ON your body.
According to a Huffington Post article, "The Average Woman Puts 515 Synthetic Chemicals On Her Body Every Day Without Knowing" and "60 percent of what we put onto our skin is absorbed into our bodies." How scary is that? That's why I'm absolutely in love with natural, non-toxic beauty companies that stress clean ingredients.
I'll talk about a few of my favorite brands in this post. All brands and products below are stuff I've used and love. I've linked every product as well.
Beauty Counter - shampoo, conditioner, brightening facial mask, balancing facial mask, hydrating body lotion
OBSESSED with Beauty Counter. They ban over 1,500 harmful chemicals from all their products. And what's even better is that even though their products are safe and good for you, they also WORK. I've tried other natural shampoos and conditioners that just left my hair flat, this stuff is great.
Primally Pure - deodorant, body butter
Primally Pure is another brand I absolutely love. Their favorite product of mine is their natural deodorant. If I were to recommend one product in your bathroom to switch to a natural, non-toxic brand, it would be your deodorant. The amount of toxins and chemicals that gets put into conventional brands and that then gets absorbed so easily through your armpit skin is so scary. Read this article if you're not convinced.
Juice Beauty - blemish clearing cleanser
If you have acne-prone skin like I do, I highly recommend this cleanser for your face! It smells so good, made with natural ingredients, helps fight blemishes, and doesn't leave your face dried out afterwards. I only use their cleanser, but I've also heard good things about Juice Beauty makeup.
Franklin & Whitman - face mask, botanical steam, dry shampoo
Franklin & Whitman is a really cool company with a really cool mission. All their products are also made with amazing ingredients and the ones I've tried have all been awesome! On a regular basis, I use their Oak Lane face mask and East Falls dry shampoo. I also occasionally do their face steam. Of all their products, their dry shampoo is my favorite! Smells amazing and works so good.
Tula - Pro-Glycolic 10% PH Resurfacing Gel (Toner)
I just started using Tula's glycolic toner about 3 months ago and it's a game changer! I've definitely noticed an improvement in my skin's texture and leaves such a nice clean feeling. I'm excited to try some of their other products because I've heard such good things, so I'll let you all know!
Hope all of this was helpful! There's a few other products and brands I like to use that I'll follow up with in another post. I'll also do another post on non-toxic makeup and household cleaning products!
